Introducing The Atelier Wen Hao Ruby Red

By Daniel Yong

A few months ago, you may have read my story on the Atelier Wen guys and their watches. I’m obviously a big fan of the brand for what they represent, and it helps that their watches are beautiful and fairly priced. It’s not a normal thing in the watch world where you can buy a piece with a porcelain dial for under 1500 Australian! If you still have no idea what I’m talking about, you can visit my story via the link below.

In summary, I’m a huge fan of Atelier Wen as they are honest, and attempt to break down the stigma that Chinese products are synonymous with being poorly made. Another concept that I really admire, is the marrying of two cultures to create a design that takes the best from China and France. Side note, Robin and Wilfred are both French, and their designers Liu Yuguan and Li Mingliang, are Chinese (and experts in Chinese design). Since the article was written, the team has produced and added a beautiful Hao Green Edition for fans. It’s basically a reinterpretation of the existing Hao model but replaces the blue prints with emerald green. Furthermore, the tempered blue steel hands are replaced with rhodium-plated hands.

Meet the Hao in Ruby Red

To celebrate Chinese New Year this year (Saturday 25th January), Atelier Wen has produced a beautiful Hao in ruby red. I’m not going to lie, this one is my favourite and there are only 25 made for us to purchase. By the time I have completed this story, you might still be able to secure your own, but be quick!

What’s new?

Similar to the Green Edition, the only thing that has changed is the printing on the dial. Obviously, the green has now been replaced with red. However, what is significant about this piece is that in Chinese culture (and other Asian cultures), red symbolizes luck, joy and happiness. This is why during important events, red can be seen on almost everything. Think Chinese weddings and of course, Chinese New Year. Heck, just go to any Chinese restaurant or casino (hello Macau) and I bet there would be some kind of theme working around the colour.

In my opinion, this is probably one of the most important models for the brand as they are a company which celebrates Chinese culture after all. I predict that once these sell out, and people punch themselves for not ordering one, they might just go up on the pre-owned market. So don’t be one of those guys, get yours now!

Both the Hao Green Edition and the Ruby Red Edition are currently listed for 790 USD on the website.
